What can you do to boost your immune system?

The human body is made up of trillions and trillions of cells. These cells combine to form organs or tissues that serve specific functions. A cell that dies will be replaced by another. Chemical signals, called hormones, allow cells to communicate with each other. Hormones control all bodily functions, including growth, development, metabolism, immunity and immune system.

Hormones, chemicals that are secreted throughout the body by glands, are chemicals. They circulate through the blood stream and act as messengers to regulate how our bodies function. Some hormones are produced internally while others are made outside of the body.

Hormone production occurs when hormone-producing cells release their contents into your bloodstream. Once hormones have been released, they travel through the body until reaching their target organ. In some cases hormones can remain active for only a few hours. Other hormones stay active longer and continue to influence the body's functioning even after they leave the bloodstream.

Some hormones are made in large quantities. Others are produced in smaller amounts.

Some hormones only are produced during certain periods of life. For instance, estrogen is produced during puberty, pregnancy, menopause, and old age. Women can get estrogen to build breasts, prevent osteoporosis, and keep their bones healthy. It helps to stimulate hair growth and maintains skin's softness.

How To

What does "vitamin" actually mean?

Vitamins are organic compounds that can be found in foods. Vitamins aid us in absorbing nutrients from the food we eat. Vitamins are not made by the body, so they must be obtained through food.

There are two types: water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve quickly in water. You can find vitamin C,B1 or thiamine, B2 or riboflavin and B3 or niacin, B3/niacin, B6/pyridoxine, folic Acid, biotin and pantothenic Acid as examples. Fat-soluble vitamins can be stored in the liver or in fatty tissue. Vitamin D, E, K and A are some examples.

Vitamins can be classified according to biological activity. There are eight major vitamin groups:

  • A - vital for healthy growth.
  • C - essential for nerve function and energy generation.
  • D – Essential for healthy teeth, bones and joints
  • E is necessary for good vision, reproduction.
  • K – Required for healthy nerves & muscles.
  • P - Essential for strong bones and teeth.
  • Q - Aids digestion and iron absorption
  • R - necessary for making red blood cells.

The recommended daily allowance (RDA), for vitamins, varies depending upon age, gender, or physical condition. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, (FDA), sets the RDA value.

For example, the RDA for vitamin A is 400 micrograms per dayfor adults 19 years or older. Pregnant mothers need 600 micrograms per days because it is vital for the development and growth of their baby. Children ages 1-8 require 900 micrograms per day. Children under 1 year old require 700 micrograms daily, while infants over one year old need 500 micrograms every day. This decreases between 9 and 12 months.

Children aged 1-18 years need 800 micrograms daily, while children overweight require 1000 micrograms per days. Children who are severely obese or underweight will need 1200 micrograms each day.

Children ages 4-8 years who have been diagnosed with anemia need 2200 micrograms per day of vitamin C.

2000 micrograms are required daily for good health in adults over 50. Breastfeeding or pregnant women require 3000 micrograms per daily due to higher nutrient demands.

1500 micrograms are required daily by adults over 70 because they lose approximately 10% of their muscle each decade.

Women who have been pregnant or are lactating require more than the RDA. Pregnant women require 4000 micrograms daily during pregnancy, and 2500 micrograms every day after birth. Breastfeeding mothers need 5000 micrograms per day when breast milk is being produced.
